Excellent Resource for Presbyterian Worship Planners

One-line review: Buy this book if you plan worship in a Reformed or Presbyterian Church! Do it now!

This book is not primarily a book of worship services like the Presbyterian Book of Common Worship. Rather, it assumes that a worship planner in one of the Presbyterian and Reformed denominations is seeking resources to supplement materials that may be already available in denominational service books. And this book provides that: among many other selections there are 70 calls to worship and opening responses, 71 prayers of confession, 29 prayers of the people, and an equally vast number of resources for the liturgical year.

There is a valuable introduction on the practice and planning of Christian worship. Other features that make this book useful for worship planners include a large number of resources labeled "mindful of children," a sensible copyright policy, and a CD-ROM that facilitates using the contents in preparing materials for use in worship.

This book has its origin in a small Reformed denomination, the Christian Reformed Church, but it is historically and theologically rooted, alert to issues in preparing contemporary worship, and reflective of the broad mainstream of Presbyterian and Reformed worship practice. The style throughout is both classical and contemporary, avoiding both historicism and trendiness as though either was an virtue in itself.

I am frankly amazed that this resource is available it its price, and I am happy to recommend this to anyone involved in planning Sunday worship for any church in the Presbyterian and Reformed worship tradition!

What are you waiting for? Buy it now

I have only had this book in my possession for a short time and already it has repaid my initial investment with interest. While obviously designed with the worship needs of Reformed and Presbyterian Churches firmly in mind, this book has the capacity to enrich the thinking of worship leaders in a whole variety of Christian traditions. The sheer wealth of the riches on offer has got to be seen to be believed. This title now has an honourable place next to my copy of the Book of Common Worship [PCUSA] and Common Order [Church of Scotland]. The availability of a CD Rom in conjunction with this volume is worth the purchase price in itself. The only shortcoming in this volume is that there are no suggested service outlines for weddings, funerals and other occasional pastoral events. But this is a purely personal opininon and maybe the publishers have ideas about this for the future. An excellent resource altogether and well deserving of its 5 star status.

The Worship Soucebook provides hundreds of early (first century and following) worship documents. There is no "in depth analysis", rather the documents speak clearly for themselves. Read the Eucharistic texts, dismissal texts and many hundreds of original worship forms employed through out the history of Christianity. A special bonus is the provision of a CD-rom with the text that provides many of the prayers and responses to be easily included in your worship services. Many power point files are already created and ready to use. Permission to use them is also provided with the purchase of the book. I have used it extensively in my academic studies as well as in designing and leading worship services. I recommend it with absolutely no reservations.

Easily one of the most influential musicians in the history of jazz, Miles Davis is the archetypal jazz artist: a brilliant, elusive and enigmatic virtuoso. Since he arrived in New York in the late 1940s to work with Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, Davis has transformed the jazz idiom, initiating a series of new jazz movements beginning with the cool jazz period in the early 1950s and continuing with the release of the groundbreaking album Kind of Blue at the end of the decade. But the accolades from jazz critics and fans usually end with his late 1960s work; around that time, Miles abandoned conventional jazz practices to experiment with avant-garde improvisation, rock music and electric instruments, using elaborate, electronic postproduction techniques to hone his studio recordings. Those explorations became what is now known as "fusion." Music journalist Tingen meticulously dissects Miles's bands, sidemen and musical techniques, offering a wealth of candid firsthand commentary on Miles and his music from former sidemen like pianist Herbie Hancock, guitarist John McLaughlin, saxophonist Wayne Shorter and other musicians, as well as Miles's friends, lovers and ex-wives. Most importantly, Tingen examines Miles's always turbulent but wildly creative relationship with Teo Macero, his producer at Columbia Records. Several fine Davis biographies have appeared over the past few years, mostly ignoring or downplaying much of the music discussed here by Tingen, a music journalist based in Scotland and California. Arguing that Davis succumbed to rock influences to the detriment of his jazz stylings, many critics and listeners have denigrated the trumpeter's electric recordings. Tingen traces these experiments using examples from 1967 onward, culminating in Davis's 1969 masterpiece, Bitches Brew. That recording opened floodgates of criticism, but it also attracted a number of new listeners who welcomed the later music of 1969-75, as well as the work following his 1981 return from retirement until his death in 1991. Tingen recognizes that Davis recorded some duds, but he convincingly shows that his subject was entirely serious about developing this style. Featuring firsthand accounts from more than 50 musicians, producers, and colleagues, including Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, and Wayne Shorter, this proves an invaluable work on an oft-neglected aspect of Davis's career. For the first 20 years of Miles Davis' prolific career in jazz, few critics could find anything negative to say about his music at all. But when Miles went electric in the late 1960s, the traditionalists turned on him with charges of "selling out" to commercial interests, record company politics, and worse. "The greatest example of self-violation in the history of art," wrote Stanley Crouch, quoting Nietzsche's assessment of Wagner. Tingen dismisses such critics and in this book explores the great musician's electric music on its own terms. Tingen's research is exhaustive. He interviews more than 50 of Miles' sidemen, producers, friends, and lovers from the period to convincingly make the case that Davis' recordings from this era are serious music. Not only did Miles discover and nurture a generation of musicians now at the forefront of jazz, Tingen argues, he took jazz improvisation to even more challenging, if sublime, levels. Above all, Tingen paints a sensitive portrait of a musician struggling with age and ill health and the demands of art and fame and desperate to return jazz to the center of African American youth culture. Much of MILES BEYOND contains perhaps the best explanations for Davis' artistry--as well as the contradictions and controversy surrounding Miles the human being--as anything I've ever read about him (and that covers a LOT of territory). Tingen effectively discusses Davis' Zen-like ability to maximize his sidepersons' potential, takes a praiseworthy stab at a psychological analysis (e.g., Miles' self-destructive streaks, his voilent tendencies), and does a heroic job of placing the 1973-75 group among Davis' best-ever units. Davis' music in general stands the test of time because he built on the past, not forgot it. Also, Miles' aesthetic successes came despite physical and psychological problems that seemingly left him devoid of inner peace when not creating music.
A key aspect of this book is that Tingen conducted fresh interviews with most of Davis' sidemen from his electric period. Thus there are a lot of fresh anecdotes and explanations particularly regarding the music itself. For instance, I've rarely read interviews with Davis' 1973-75 sidemen. Tingen talked in depth to all but one of them. Overall, Tingen explains with unique clarity Davis' gift for bringing his musical concepts to fruition, as well as Miles' ability to inspire his sidepersons to play "above what they know." Interviews with significant non-musical associates--specifically girlfriends--also help to provide as complete a picture as possible of Davis.
If the book has a flaw, it is the degree to which the author's views of Davis' recordings tend to move out of sync with his outstanding analysis of Davis' artistry in general--he leaves the impression that the "electric era" only sporadically lived up to what is in effect the author's own hype. Arguably he clings to some of the paradigms that he praises Davis for breaking (e.g., the overlength of many tracks). I even cringed when Tingen labeled the aesthetically-groundbreaking, politically-charged SUN CITY track "Let Me See Your I.D." (with a brilliant Gil Scott-Heron rap) as "boring funk-disco." And is DOO-BOP really "bubblegum teenage music?" I couldn't resist wondering if the overwrought electric-Miles hater Stanley Crouch hijacked the text in instances such as these.
Tingen claims that that his musical upbringing was on the avant edge of rock. I'm pondering whether or not that background is any more sufficient than that of a mainstream jazz fan to evaluate Davis' 1967-91 recordings. In my mind, to understand this era requires the ability to get swept away--intrinsically and extrinsically--by the deep grooves of the likes of funk legends James Brown, Sly Stone, and George Clinton. Furthermore, I think it requires open ears for such pop superstars like Madonna, Prince, and Michael Jackson (all of whom have drawn positive critical notices), such eclectic visionaries as Joni Mitchell, and also to have a discerning ear for styles that critics abhor (e.g., top-40 pop) as well as favor (reggae, alternative rock). I believe that Davis listened to and had an affinity for most or all of the above...and I am left with the impression that most or all of the above may be relatively alien to Tingen.
Despite these concerns, the bottom line is that the book's benefits FAR outweigh any problematic aspects. Tingen has done a remarkable job at getting "inside" Miles' musical mind. Most of the occasional shortcomings to Tingen's musical analysis are minimized by his often letting the musicians explain what is happening. No matter how well you think you know Miles, you'll know him better after reading this book, even if you find yourself having differences of opinion regarding some of the particulars.

Detailed overview of electric Miles

Tingen's great contribution is that he portrays Miles' early electric period as a continuation of the experimentation he was doing with the mid-60s quintet, along with pressure from his record company and his own desire to reach out to a broader audience. However, what he came up with was certainly not "commercial" or a "sellout" as some critics have asserted. Instead it was some of the most beautiful and challenging music of his career. But Tingen is also honest enough to point out that a lot of what Davis recorded after his "return" in 1981 was garbage. By 1985 Davis was just a showman resting on past laurels.
The sessionography and discography are excellent, especially Tingen's analysis of Teo Macero's groundbreaking use of editing. Through interviews with people like Lenny White and Billy Cobham, we get a great glimpse into the way Miles thought about music, the way he ran sessions, how he recorded, and how he interacted with his band - often they were downright afraid of him!
Some minor gripes: I just disagreed with some of his assessments of some Miles tracks over others, but that is a personal thing. The other drawback is Tingen's analysis of Miles' music through Buddhism and other exotic philosophies. Thankfully these are brief, but probably would have drawn some chuckles from the Man himself.

It's About That Time

Paul Tingen's excellent new book is an in-depth treatment of Miles's "electric" period from 1967 to 1991. The timing of this publication couldn't have been better as Columbia/Legacy continues to issue/reissue important recordings from this era, including the recent "Live At Fillmore (It's About That Time)" and "The Complete In A Silent Way" box set.
The strength of the book lies in the fact that Tingen evaluates the electric Miles period on its own terms: an approach this much misunderstood and often maligned music truly deserves. Tingen backs up his thorough analysis with new interviews and first-person accounts from band members and other colleagues.
Tingen's book has set a new benchmark in writing on Miles Davis and jazz fusion. "Miles Beyond" offers both the casual listener and the fanatic fan much to learn about the electric years. And like all good music criticism, this book made me return to the source. I've been listening to albums like "Jack Johnson" and "Agharta" with fresh ears. An essential read!

In the introduction to this polemic against political Islam, Pipes stakes out the political territory just to the left of Pat Buchanan and well to the right of almost everyone else. From this "moderate" position, Pipes argues that Islam is not an inherent threat to Western civilization, but that militant Islam, a branch of Islamic piety that seeks to bring the world under control of Islamic law, is the greatest threat since the cold war. He goes on to explore the threats posed to America by an influx of Muslim immigrants, extol the benefits of racial profiling, and argue that the only viable form of Islamic belief is "secularist" Islam, which embraces Western values and eschews traditional Islamic ones. Never mind that Pipes' argument about the inferiority of Islamic values is precisely the same argument that radical Islamists make about Western values. It's controversial and often interesting stuff--but hardly new. Some of the essays collected here are more than 10 years old (although they have been updated to reflect September 11). There's nothing here that hasn't been said by Ann Coulter or Buchanan or their ilk, but Pipes will make appearances on conservative radio and TV shows, which should drum up some attention. John Green

The war is with Militant Islam - NOT Terrorism

Pipe's key contribution in Militant Islam Reaches America is the distinction he makes between Islam the religion and Militant Islam or Islamism the ideology. Militant Islam is comparable to Nazism or Marxism in that it is a radical political ideology that has the stated goal of taking over the world. In light of 9-11, Fukiyama's "end of history" theory - that the West has won and the rest is faits accomplis - is seen as a little pre-mature.
And this threat is very real. Unlike the President and others who use confusing and inaccurate labels like "evil doers" and "war on Terrorism", Pipes clearly defines the enemy: Militant Islam. As Pipe so eloquently states: "And if it is true that most Muslims are not Islamist, it is no less true that all Islamists are Muslims.".
Pipes does a good job of describing the peaceful - yet insidious groups that use our court system and our ultra-tolerant media to get special treatment and promote their cause - as well as the more visible violent strain of Islamism. Tolerance toward Islam in America allows a double standard - e.g. a sanitized view of Islam is pushed in public schools and the main stream media and negative Islamic views are not tolerated. Contrast that with negative reviews of Christian or Jewish groups that are all too prevalent in schools and our media.
Pipes holds out hope that Turkey, as secular moderate Islamic state, can co-exist with the west and be a model for other Islamic states. What is not so hopeful is the fact that virtually all the other Islamic states in the Middle East are moving closer toward Muslim fundamentalism - not closer to Western secularism. Pipes shows us an interesting fact that the core of the Islamist movement is in fact highly educated over-achieving Westernized men (most of the WTC highjackers) - not the underclass in abject poverty that we have been told is behind this radical movement. On the contrary, this is very convincing evidence that indeed ideology - not poverty is the driving force behind Militant Islam. The issue is not that poverty causes radicals. The issue is that intelligent radical ideologues use poverty, intimidation, and brainwashing (Madrasas) to help promote their cause.
Pipes devotes a couple of chapters to Jamil Al-Amin - a.k.a Rap Brown and Elijah Mohammed - a.k.a. Elija Pool - and the Nation of Islam and the Black Muslim movement. It is clear that radical Islamists have used these demagogues and their ilk to their advantage. It is important for Black and White and all Americans to understand this phenomenon and realize that NOL and the Black Muslim movement is not just a reaction to racism. As Al-Amin commented in his book Revolution by the Book "..the Constitution of the United States..its main essence it is diametrically opposed to what Allah has commanded". This is a statement of sedition. These people want to take away your constitution and replace it with the Qur'an.
For moderate Muslims and the West to win this war, the West must not appease these neo-fascists hiding behind a head-dress. We must realize that so-called moderate Muslim organization like Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), American Muslim Council (AMC), Muslim American Society, et. al. all defended Al-Amin a convicted murderer as a good Muslim. This is perhaps the least of their sins. These groups could prove to us that they are not supporters of Militant Islam by denouncing the likes of Al-Amin, Ahmad Adna Chaundry (another convicted murderer), Mohammad Salah (accused of financing aid to Hamas). In all cases their silence is deafening.
So what can we do? The first step is to wake up and call the enemy what it is: Militant Islam and understand that it is as insidious and dangerous as any strain of fascism we have witnessed in our lifetime. We should set about not to just defeat the nebulous notion of "global terrorism", it is time to put a face on who the enemy is. Perhaps the Bush administration is using the vague "terrorist" label for diplomatic reasons. I hope that is their reason. But I agree with Pipes and von Clausewitz that "contradictory goals in war is a mistake". And we are at war.
So who exactly is the enemy? The inner core is the likes of Al-Qaeda, Bin Laden, the Taliban and their ilk. Our strike in Afghanistan was a good first pass, but the job is far from over. The second ring is larger population of militant sympathizers in most of the Arab world and other Islamic countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, and Bosnia. Pipes estimates that as many as 150 million or 15% of the Muslim world fall into this group. And the third ring is non-Militant Muslims, but those infected with Anti-American hate - Saddam and Qadhadhafi fall into this group. So the final toll is about half the Muslim population.
So we must realize that what we have is not what Huntington called the "Clash of Civilizations". I think it makes more sense to call it a class of ideologies. A good example is that fact that militant Muslims do a great job of killing other Muslims that do not go along with the program - as exemplified in 100,000 plus dead Muslims in Algeria, and many times that number in the Iran-Iraq war.
So the answer appears to be an updated version of George Kennan's cold war doctrine that Pipes paraphrases: "a long term patient but firm and vigilant containment of (its) expansive tendencies." And by our fortitude and will we will convince the moderate Muslim world that it is worth fighting for Western tolerance and freedom rather than a world of fascism and chains.

Understanding Islamism

In this volume Middle East expert Daniel Pipes looks at the changing world since September 11. While some of the essays here were penned before that tragedy, all deal with the rise of Muslim militancy, and how the West should respond.
Pipes begins by arguing that militant Muslims, or Islamists, do not represent all followers of Islam. The good news is they only comprise, at tops, fifteen per cent of the total. The bad news is, with one billion Muslims, 150 million are extremists. It is the Islamists that are the real threat, says Pipes, not traditional Muslims.
Pipes provides the historical backdrop for this new militancy. For their first six centuries, Muslims enjoyed huge success. By the 13th century however decline set in, and for the next six centuries they found themselves heading to the bottom of world affairs, as power and wealth slowly ebbed away. The loss of their golden age, and their sense of alienation and frustration resulted in three recent responses.
Secularism, the first response, is seen in countries such as Turkey. The second option, reformism, meant trying to live with the West. The third option, Islamism, is the focus of this book. Militant Islam seeks to reclaim its golden age, wants the total imposition of Shari'a law, and rejects completely Western influences.
Pipes shows that Islamism is in fact a radical, utopian ideology, of the same mould as Marxism-Leninism or fascism. It is totalitarian in nature, and seeks salvation in political power, not individual religion. Whenever Islamists take power, as in Iran, Sudan and Afghanistan, a bloody tyranny results.
Pipes argues that most traditional Muslims disagree with the premises of the Islamists. This is reflected in part by the fact that often traditional Muslims are the main victims of militant Islam. Algeria is a good case in point, with tens of thousands of Algerians killed (compared to some 80 foreigners).
Since its ascendancy almost three decades ago, Islamism has become they main threat to freedom and democracy. It seeks global hegemony, just as past ideologies did. Fueled by fanaticism and hatred, militant Islam has become the new focus of evil in the world.
There are two main ways in which Islamists can achieve their goal of world dominion: revolution or integration. The latter comes in the form of immigration to the West, high birth rates, and conversion. All three means are resulting in rising Muslim populations in most Western nations.
The other option, bloody struggle, is something the West is becoming all too familiar with. Suicide bombers and terrorist cells are active around the world, and this threat is one all Western governments must come to terms with. Indeed, Pipes shows how militant Islam has been targeting Americans well before September 11.
Pipes sees some hope, however. Muslim unity has often been seen as an oxymoron, with the Iraq-Iran conflict being but one example. Another issue is how moderate Islam deals with the threat. If modernism is embraced and Western values are seen as compatible with Islam, then the fanatical arm may be contained. But it is by no means clear in which direction the majority of Muslims will move in the future. It is Muslims themselves, argues Pipes, not the West, who will determine the outcome of this post-Cold War ideological battle.
Pipes also writes about Muslims living in the US. There may be 2 or 3 million of them there. Pipes argues that on every front, the US is doing all it can to be hospitable to Muslims. There is a de facto affirmative action mentality in place, with schools, governments, the media, even the military, all fearful of showing any disrespect for Muslims.
Tolerance and respect of course are in order, argues Pipes, but in many ways Muslims are being given preferential treatment, so much so that the US government has become "a discreet missionary for the faith. Without anyone quite realizing it, the resources of the federal government have been deployed to help Muslims spread their message." Pipes documents numerous examples of just how this is in fact happening.
Pipes argues that if Islamists get their way in Western nations, freedom of speech concerning Islam and militant Islam would all but cease. It is becoming increasingly difficult to say anything which might be regarded as critical of Islam.
Pipes briefly examines the question of whether Islamism and jihad are an integral part of Islam, or a distortion of it. He recognises that Islam, like all great religions, is made up of different schools and is subject to varieties of interpretation, "from the mystical to the militant, from the quietist to the revolutionary. Its most basic ideas have been susceptible of highly contrasting explications."
Thus Pipes sees a battle for the soul of Islam being waged, with moderates and militants competing for dominance. But he sees terroristic jihad against the West as but "one reading of Islam ... not the eternal essence of Islam".
He argues that if half the population of the Muslim world hates America, the other half does not. It is to these more moderate Muslims that the West must work with, along with its own Muslim populations, to see that the radical Islamists do not prevail. The struggle will be long and difficult, says Pipes, but an Islamist victory is by no means certain.

Shari'a Trumps the Constitution

Our nation, founded on the right to open and unfettered exchange of ideas from which we derive much of our greatness, still has one taboo about which it is difficult to speak openly. Not Christianity: Mapplethorpe's defamatory photography is not only tolerated but subsidized. Nor anti-Semitism: so rampant on our campuses, it is constitutionally protected. There is only one religion benefiting from so much deference and hypersensitivity that it can trigger the recall of books, cause the dismissal of teachers, and bring politicians trembling to their knees.

This repression of free speech has been long ongoing outside of our borders. An insufficiently respectful British author was rewarded with a contract on his life, and translators of his book were assassinated. Open religious discourse has quite ceased to exist in the Arab world, with intense discrimination against Christians, Jews, and Hindus.

Daniel Pipes' work reiterates things we knew but somehow got repressed from our public consciousness, and reveals much else which never made it there in the first place. Fabulously detailed and with a wealth of references, this guide clarifies the ongoing war that culminated on September 11.

Pipes makes a wonderfully clear distinction between the religion of Islam and the political ideology called Islamism. Like communism and fascism, Islamism seeks the overthrow of democratic society by individuals who feel excluded from an elite they should be part of. Islamists are typically educated middle-class young men masquerading in religion while indulging in perversely un-Islamic behavior. By Princeton historian Sean Wilentz, terrorism is caused by "money, education, and privilege."

Recalling early successes in science, technology, and world domination, Islamists suffer from traumatic frustration ingrained over a thousand years of severe social, political, and ecomonic failure and the inability to improve. Western education only fuels the envy and heightens the sense of impotence. Little else binding them than hatred towards the West, wars between Muslim nations are in fact three times more common than those against infidel nations.

Ironically, ignorance obscures the fact that modern Islam actually borrows from Christianity. The Islamist repudiation of the importance of "who you are" for "where you are" copies the Western notions of nation-state and jurisdiction. A rather flimsy and self-contradictory Islamic theory of economics is based on Marxism and fascism. It is no surprise that Islamisation is inevitably followed by severe economic failure and political repression.

Far from suffering discrimination, Muslims have a privileged position in the United States and are thriving, ready to complain about any perceived slight, winning fantastic monetary settlements, and inducing employers to provide religious sensiti-i-i-vity training. Even 'Married With Children' is not safe from the Muslim protests after September 11.

Middle Eastern academic studies are suffering an all-time low credibility, having been tainted with a wash of Saudi oil money that sponsors intellectually vacuous teaching and writing, farcical distinctions between 'good' and 'bad' Islamism (as if the overthrow of civilzation could be good by any means), or dangerously denying there is any threat at all. Quoting one militant, "a moderate Islamist is someone who does not have the means of acting ruthlessly to seize power immediately."

While our Government repeats the mistake of Napoleon and Mussolini of sweet-talking to curry favor with the Muslim world, American Muslim leaders are openly calling for the conversion of the United States into a caliphate. Many clerics agree that the tenets of Islam are fundamentally incompatible with our Constitution. Says one, "Muslims cannot accept the legitimacy of the secular system in the United States." The strategy for imposing Shari'a in America includes demoralization by terror, immigration, reproduction, and conversion; the latter feeding off the culture of liberal 'blame America first' self-hatred that causes many to accept Islam mostly as a protest against their heritage.

Daniel Pipes has managed to write a fair and courageous book that is deeply troubling but greatly inspiring. Packing so much information and private and public policy recommendations, this could have been a much longer book, and one will want to reread it often. If Hamas believes we are in a "battle of civilizations", we are in it for the long haul.

Since his retirement from Boeing in 2000, he has taught aviation maintenance management courses at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida. He developed this book because no suitable text for courses such as his existed.

Great Textbook

This textbook is for a very specialized subject, Aviation Maintenance Management. The author has a wealth of knowledge and experience in the field and shares that throughout the book. The book is mainly geared toward civil aviation maintenance management and in particular the airlines. However, the information and explanations are detailed enough to cover the subject, yet easy to read. Tables and figures are placed appropriately in the text to reinforce learning. The book is organized logically and can be used by any professor to build a class curriculum around it. The appendixes add depth to material by discussing uncommon, but relevant subjects. Finally the author has well documented the text with references to the FAA Regulations, Advisory Circulars, and reports. In summary this is an excellent textbook for use in a classroom environment or as a stand alone book to further one's knowledge of Aviation Maintenance Management!!!!

About the Author
Russell L. Colling, CPP, CHPA, M.S. Security Management - Michigan State, has worked for over 40 years in healthcare administration and healthcare security management and is also the founding president of the International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (IAHSS). Mr. Colling was formerly the Executive Vice President of Security Services at Hospital Shared Services of Colorado. He has authored two books with the Joint Commission for Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and also has extensive experience in security litigation cases.

Tony W. York, CPP, CHPA, has over twenty years’ experience administering healthcare security programs and is chief operating officer for HSS Inc., a specialized security firm based in Denver. York, who is board certified in security management, holds the Certified Protection Professional (CPP) designation and the Certified Healthcare Protection Administrator (CHPA) designation. A past president and board chair of the International Association for Healthcare Security & Safety (IAHSS), York chairs the Council on Guidelines. This council produces the Healthcare Security Industry Guidelines and Healthcare Security Design Guidelines. This is the Authority on the Subject!

Having worked in healthcare/hospital security for many years, you simply cannot find a better source on the subject. Past editions of this book were very good, but this time it's great! Building on past editions and incorporating the latest guidelines from TJC and the IAHSS, you could use the data in this book to set up a complete protection system for any healthcare facility. It covers so many topics, some complex, in an easy to read format complete with charts, reference materials, etc.
I highly recommend this book to anyone invloved in healthcare protective services from the officer 'on the beat' to top level hospital executives. It's must read for all directors, managers and supervisors of healthcare security forces. This book will not disappoint!

Heartfelt and sexy......

I absolutely loved this book. This was my first time reading one of Mr. Murray's books and I was completely enthralled in it. Vivid, sexy, intelligent....I didn't want to put it down, and I'm not even a boxing fan. Christiana was hilarious and almost fearless, while Dante was tense and cautious, although he too had a great sense of humor. They made a very believable couple. I also loved that although Dante's Italian heritage was explored, Mr. Murray kept the interracial mention to a dull roar. It only mattered that they were man and woman, not white and black. It was a wonderful story that I could read again and again. This has inspired me to read more of Mr. Murray's books.

The Real Thing

I just love the story of Dante, and Tiana. It is a real love story for real people. The plot is warm, funny, and carries you along page after page. Dante is sexy, and stubborn. Tiana, is strong, lovely, and to the point. Kudos for a fighter with a big heart. Loved it......

Long on laughs, emotionally deep - A great summer read

Personality magazine reporter, Christiana Artis is bored stiff with interviewing people who are famous for no good reason. Too often they're as dumb as a box of rocks and half as interesting. She wants to return to interviewing everyday people who makes a difference in the lives of others. People who live their lives with a purpose.

Although ten years of anonymity have made Dante "Blood and Guts" Lattanza, former middleweight boxing champion less of a household name, it hasn't claimed his skill in the ring. He has a point to prove to the world, to his ex-wife and to himself. He isn't a loser. He's someone that she, his son and friends can once again be proud of.

However, it's not his return to the boxing ring that gains Christiana's attention. Nope, it's his becoming one of the Sexiest Men Alive that brings her to his door and sexy doesn't begin to describe Dante's chiseled good looks, perfect physique or smooth Italian tongue.

Could Dante be as deep and stimulating as he looks? Or is he, like so many other celebrities she's interviewed? As shallow as a kiddie pool?

Before Christiana can ask her first question, and confirm his lack of depth, Dante makes an arrangement with her. She can ask five questions. But she must first complete five tasks to get her answers. It's not long before the tasks turn to kisses and the questions to the satisfied moans of bliss. But when Christiana, breaks the rules and publishes his off-the-record comments, Dante once again remembers why he never trusted reporters, not even a sexy cioccolata one like Christiana.

Using his trademark wit and humor JJ Murray once again brings together two characters that are believable and easy to relate to in his latest summer read, "The Real Thing."

Dante's not only super sexy, he's all that a real man should be. Responsible, respectful and a great Dad to his son DJ. While Christiana is a heroine that female readers will see a bit of themselves in. Their lives isn't all that they want them to be, but they're working to get them there. And when tough times come, they don't throw in the towel, they reinforce their battlements and charge on toward their end goal. For Christiana, that's remembering not only her roots, but how those roots shaped her into the reporter she is today. While, for Dante, that's winning back the love of his life...now if only he could get his heart and his sense of honor to agree on who that is.

Long on laughs, yet emotionally deep, "The Real Thing" is a refreshing story of two regular people...even if one of them is famous....who simply want an everlasting love to last the ages.
