Allen E. Ivey received in Ed.D. from Harvard. He is Distinguished University Professor (Emeritus) at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and is currently President of Microtraining Associates, an educational publishing firm. An A.B.P.P. in counseling psychology, Dr. Ivey is a past-president and Fellow of the Division of Counseling Psychology of the American Psychological Association and is been a life member of American Counseling Association. He has published over 25 books and 200 articles in his career. His works have been translated into multiple languages. Paul Pedersen's innovations in multi-cultural counseling and therapy have made immense contributions to our profession. He has served as Master Lecturer for APA, has taught throughout the world, and authored or edited 40 books on multicultural counseling. Mary Bradford Ivey has her doctorate from the University of Massachusetts and is currently Vice President of Microtraining Associates. She is a former school counselor and she received special recognition when her program was named one of the ten most effective in the United States. She has co-authored multiple books widely translated and has lectured and keynoted throughout the world.

About the Author
Schuyler M. Moore is a partner in the Corporate Entertainment Department at the Los Angeles office of the national law firm of Stroock & Stroock & Lavan LLP. He was the founding Chairman of the Entertainment Tax Subsection of the Los Angeles County Bar Association Taxation Section. Mr. Moore holds undergraduate and law degrees from the University of California at Los Angeles, where he was first in his law class. He has published numerous articles dealing with a wide variety of tax subjects and is the author of The Biz: The Basic Business, Legal and Financial Aspects of the Film Industry. Mr. Moore is an adjunct professor for the UCLA Law School teaching Entertainment Law.

The text is divided into five chapters: "The Path to War," "Europe & the Atlantic War," the Pacific theater, Africa & the Middle East, and the end of the war. Each section is divided into several two-page topics. The title page of each chapter asks three questions that are answered in the text. It is followed by a two-page time line with boxed information and vintage photos (some are color enhanced). Single images fill other spreads. The format is somewhat busy with randomly spaced photos, paragraphs, charts, graphs, cutaways, and maps. A colored band down the outer right margin of some pages features a "more here" reference that lists subjects to research, further reading, TV and movies, historical sites, activities, and a mini glossary. A special code permits readers to log on to a website that has several interactive buttons with topics such as "Child Heroes," "On the Front Lines," "Animal Heroes," "Secrets and Spies," "Heroes at Home," and "Everyday Heroes and Heroines." This is just a superb overview!

I read it because I have a column on nonfiction in School Library Journal and do talks about it all over the country. I kept renewing this one because I did not think I would like it. Then I started it and was blown away. I have read many books about World War II, but this gave me a perspective and overview that was truly illuminating. I kept reading bits aloud to my husband and then showed him the spread on the island-by-island strategy for invading Japan. He stared at it incredulously (the whole thing made sense to me in a way I had never understood before) and vowed to read the whole book.
Which he did and kept saying he wished everyone he knew would read it because it provided such illumination.

I wish this series would multiply and especially one on the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, and World War I. Maybe the Napoleonic wars. But we wish these were marketed to everyone. This is just absolutely excellent!

Word War 2 was a dark period in our nations history. This book will give students a peek into the way life was back then. It covers how the war started, describes where battles were fought and also has lots of information on how the war ended and what life was life after the war. Full color photos help to give a visual to tie the information together. Perfect resource for report writing.

This book gives a detailed yet on-point history of WWII appropriate for kids. The book is well & honestly written with wonderful learning points and awesome pictures!! Great factoids and definitions given along with great history timelines of the war. Highly recommended! My daughter loves it!

Wonderful, enlightening

So much fascinating information about the human bio electrical system, and how even the tiniest current of electricity can effect it. I couldn't stop reading it. Every chapter opened my eyes wider to the possibilities for creating health even with the amount of current contained in the impulse of a faint thought or intention.

I wish the print were a bit larger and the pages not so shiny, because it made it harder to read. Otherwise a very great book!

A Mind-Boggling New Scientific Understanding

James Oschman has done it, he's presenting us with the rare gift of a breakthrough understanding of the human condition that includes a profound new theory of the mechanisms of life, one with critically important clinical implications. In prose that reads like a good adventure story he presents with great clarity, comprehensiveness, and extensive endnotes a mind-boggling story from the frontiers of biophysics. Reading merely the introduction to this immensely important book will open your mind to a radically different paradigm of human functioning, one that is laying the foundation for more fully understanding all kinds of phenomena of living processes that heretofore have remained insoluble mysteries.
He discusses the nature of scientific revolution and how once shunned and ignored ideas move into the mainstream of orthodoxy only to be replaced in turn. It is time for some of the most fundamental assumptions of medical and life sciences to be examined, time for these new ideas to be tested.
Dr. Oschman cites voluminous evidence from scientific journals demonstrating that along with the communication systems we are most familiar with, the nervous and endocrine systems, there are other communication and regulatory systems that can only be understood when we look deeper into ourselves than the realms of organs and cells and even molecules with all of their complex iterations and interactions. We must go into the quantum realm of subatomic particles if we would understand the nature of life.
Biophysicists have been doing this in their labs and specialized journals but their discoveries have had little effect outside their field. What Jim has so ably accomplished that no one else has done and which is so vitally important is to carefully scrutinize this burgeoning material with the eyes of a comprehensivist and synthesize it into a new paradigm that sheds light on so many mysteries from the everyday questions of how living organisms regulate disparate functions, generate energy, et cetera. In doing so a number of fascinating questions arise in the mind of the scientifically literate that scream for investigation. So many questions that have resisted our best minds' efforts at understanding appear now ready to be answered, and give rise to the next layer of questions.
Life functions cannot be understood so long as the investigation holds to the familiar realms. We now have the tools and with Jim's contribution the theoretical framework to carry our investigation of life and especially human life into the next domain of quantum realities. The practical results, if this work is given the resources it needs, will surely be immensely important. Questions about the extraordinary and well-documented events that sometimes occur in activities like sports, the martial arts, and various healing modalities can now be investigated rationally - and perhaps someday if we do the work these now rare and inexplicable phenomena will be harnessed and reliably produced for the well-being of us all.
The evidence for this "second" nervous system, one that functions much more rapidly, is near infinitely more complex, and magnitudes of order more sensitive than the nervous system we are so familiar with is conclusive. And this system has been right in front of our eyes and under our hands all along, we just didn't have scientific tools with sufficient sensitivity to perceive and investigate it until recently. I urge everyone interested in these vital issues to get this book and spread the word.

A little disappointing

Anyone reading the title of this book might justifiably assume it was going to deal with the type of energy manifested in Qi Gong, EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques), acupuncture, Quantum-Touch and many other energy therapies - subtle energy it is often called.

The author does not want to deal with this type of energy, and admits as much, though he is careful to say he does not deny its existence. His book is devoted mainly to electromagnetic phenomena, of which there are plenty, of course, but this is not the healing energy as I understand and use it.

I have to give it four stars as it is very thorough in its limited scope; otherwise I would only have given it three precisely because it does not deal with what I see as the primary healing energy, but only with what I regard as secondary phenomena.

It's an expensive book and I am sorry I bought it, it may be useful to some, but not to me.

Great read for first time mommy's to be!

I loved reading this book while pregnant with my first born! Obviously, I had no idea what to expect throughout the pregnancy and this book made every situation comical and made me feel normal about everything from moods to cravings (and everything in between). After reading this book, I realized that I was having a normal pregnancy...YAH!! Thank You Jenny McCarthy for writing a real, honest book about the unknown!

Loved it. Great book for first time moms, veteran moms, or any human being, in general. Jenny McCarthy is funny, witty, crass, and best of all, honest. Not only is it a nice break from all of the pregnancy books you've been telling you everything you've been doing wrong or scaring the s*** out of you, but it's a good laugh. 5 stars from me, and 5 stars from you, too, after you read it.

Good fun but not for the faint-hearted!

I read this book after my pregnancy. I had fun going through Jenny's anecdotes and I really loved how the book is organized : so many more serious pregnancy books are typically of the "month by month" sort.
Here, each chapter covers one aspect of pregnancy - mostly ailments! (and each has a hilarious title with a pun) eg one on morning sickness, one on bloating, another yet on baby kicks, etc. which gives a refreshing overview of what is in store for you.
It is, indeed, pretty blunt and direct but the humor makes it go down more easily! and I could totaly relate to a lot of the tpics covered and her perception.
However, it is enough to scare a sensitive future mother, and I want to point out to all pregnant women who read it : don't worry, things are not always as bad as that, there is little chance you will endure all or even most of the issues described here, for a lot of women it's down to a few specific problems - some of us don't gain much weight, others are not bloated etc. `
When I read through the book I kept thinking, "this is the worst pregnancy I ever heard of!", not to mention the hellish delivery. Chances are you will have an easier time statistically speaking!

A criticism I have is I thought the book was overpriced for its length; I read "Baby laughs" too and the same applies - if sold together they would be worth 10 dollars, but 10 dollars each is a little over the top.

I laughed. I cried. I cackled. I sobbed.

This easy to read big -picture-slice-of-life (and death) novel sweeps through over a century of the history of the citizen's of Elmwood Springs, MO.It is the kind of book you read on blustery days, when your down with a cold, and only a hot cup of tea, a comfy throw and a sweet book will make the world feel right again. I instantly fell in love with the characters and their stories. I laughed. I cried. I cackled. I sobbed.

The best thing about this book is the myriad of characters, with all their gifts and flaws. I just loved the different personalities and how they impacted the lives of each other.

I would give the first 3/4 of this book 5+ stars and the final quarter 3 stars. The entire concept behind the book lost steam towards the end and the last chapter was just too over-the-top for me. Also, I wish there had been some kind of town directory included. After a century, it was hard to keep track of all the characters.

I love to read Fannie Flagg's books. Her books seem to have a theme, besides being funny, that "life is a gift" and "love never dies." Those same themes come across here too.
This book is placed in Elmwood Springs, Missouri, a small town. It is about the fact that "the whole town is talking about" the goings in the cemetery.
Interesting huh? Have I made your curious enough to want to read it?
For me a book by Fannie Flagg about the happenings in a cemetery was enough for me....no spoilers here.

Thoughtful story that has both humor and depth

"The Whole Town's Talking" is an adventure of a novel that's best experienced without any spoilers - other than the blurb on the back, I had no idea what kind of gem I was picking up to read.

So as not to spoil any surprises, just the sketchiest of outlines: The story takes place from 1889 and slips off to possibly wander elsewhere in 2021. Some of the story involves the birth, growth, and changes of Elmwood Springs, MO., and of the people who founded the town and their families, friends and descendants. The story doesn't limit itself to Missouri; but warmly welcomes people and events from Sweden, Chicago, New York, St. Louis, and many other destinations. Historical inventions, politics, wars, and famous people through the years (the Depression; airplanes; a moon landing; television and its popular shows and stars; a chance meeting of Bonnie and Clyde and a president and his wife) are woven neatly into the lives of the people living and dying in Elmwood Springs. There's some good business advice, how to handle a few of life's surprises (both good and not so good) and a few murders to contemplate.

What made me love the book was its tone, style, and surprises. The tone was warm and inviting; the style was deceptively light - I thought at first I might not enjoy the book as much, because it seemed too light (as in superficial). But the more I read and got involved, the more I enjoyed the words of wisdom tucked like gems in among the humor and the characters' thoughts and actions which often struck a familiar chord with me and made me laugh but also made me think. This book isn't a piece of fluff; it's got depth. And surprises - quirky little twists of fate that keep the reader well ensnared in the story. "The Whole Town's Talking" is a thoughtful, well-balanced story about life, its value, what's beyond, and about the fun and intrigue of a good mystery. I loved the book and would recommend it to anyone seeking a good, satisfying read.
