Jillette (the Penn of Penn & Teller) and his pseudonymous poker-cheating guru, Dickie, begin by saying that anyone who loves playing poker should "throw this book away." Readers will find no better advice. The dubious premise is that Dickie took Penn under his wing when Penn was 18, and as a favor, he has agreed to publish the card sharp's book. But calling the wit and wisdom of Dickie Richard sophomoric is far too kind. More accurate descriptions would be amoral ("Morality is what you make of it"), , scabrous and without redeeming social value. And the book is marred by obscenities, class insults and a machismo that would be comical if it weren't so vulgar ("If you are going to cheat, whip out your prick and cheat like a man"). If this was meant to be a joke, it's not funny. And if it's meant seriously, then the book itself is a cheat: when you're done with it, you still won't really know how to cheat at poker. (Oct. 5)

About the Author
Penn Jillette has been the larger, louder half of the performing team Penn & Teller since 1975. He is the author of the novel SOCK and, with Teller, the bestselling author of CRUEL TRICKS FOR DEAR FRIENDS and HOW TO PLAY IN TRAFFIC. Mickey D. Lynn is a writer and poker expert. He has written for television, worked in the film industry, and worked with the talent department of Celebrity Poker Showdown, but no cheating happened there. Really. Both authors live in Las Vegas.

hilarious and insightful

This is a hilarious book. As Penn Jillette explains at the beginning, Penn (ostensibly) met Dickie Richard when Penn was hitchhiking as a teenager, and Dickie taught Penn everything Dickie knew about how to cheat at cards. Penn himself isn't a card cheat, doesn't condone card cheating, and feels bad about publishing this book. But Penn owed Dickie a favor, and Dickie wanted his memoirs published, so Penn agreed. The memoirs were horribly written so Penn and his co-author rewrote them. The bulk of the book, then, is a first-person narrative from Dickie about how he cheats at poker.

Dickie explains that you could cheat in a casino, but it's too hard. Instead Dickie shows up in a town, makes "friends", and then plays poker with them, takes their money, and skips town. Dickie cheats any way he can -- from bottom dealing to marking cards to simply walking out the door with the cash box. Dickie's descriptions of what he does are amusing yet appalling -- he is a sociopath and an egomaniac, and yet he manages to be so entertaining, you can't help liking him (a bit).

Is Dickie a real person? I highly doubt it. As Penn tells us at the beginning, Dickie is a "fictional" character -- that's a big clue that you shouldn't take the narrative veridically. Does this book teach you how to cheat at poker? Kind of. It doesn't actually teach you how to bottom deal, for example, but Dickie correctly says that you can learn that from any standard magic book. It doesn't teach you a system to follow for marking cards, but Dickie correctly says that you wouldn't want to follow a standard system, since that would make your cheating easier to detect.

As I see it, the point of this book isn't to teach you how to cheat -- though you might learn about how to detect cheaters (even though Dickie insists that's not a goal of the book). The book is a novel about a card cheater. Dickie epitomises an amoral, larger-than-life showman who lives life to its fullest. I get the sense that Dickie represents a somewhat darker side of Penn. Penn manipulates cards -- and people -- to entertain others and make money. That's what being a professional magician is all about. Dickie manipulates cards and people to make money -- the entertainment comes in being able to read about it.

Disappointing and entertaining in one swoop

If you want to learn how to palm cards, uncut a deck, deal from the bottom, the second or any other part of the deck this book is not for you. In fact, in the first chapter the book cuts through those lessons by recommending you to purchase "Expert at the card table" by Erdnase to learn all those moves as "he can teach you better than I ever could.."

The book is basically stories about a card cheat and his experiences over thirty years and if it teaches anything its how to scam people for extra money when you are already an accomplished card cheat and how to find games and not get the life kicked out of you on a daily basis. Ok so after reading the book you aren't ready to go out and take on the world as a card cheat nor do you learn much more about poker. What you do get is a pretty entertaining read about the life of a card cheat and the situations they end up in. If you are looking for a factual "how to" guide then look elsewhere. If you are a poker fan and looking for an entertaining novel this is the book for you. Do I feel cheated ? Yes :) Its not what I paid for. Would I wipe the book from my memory for a refund? Probably not.

Think before buying

As a fan of Penn & Teller's other books, I was going to buy this, but in reading parts of it in a bookstore, I discovered that it's not the fun, clever, amusing book about tricks you could use to cheat at cards or even ways to have fun with your friends at a poker night.

This book is a dark and seedy account about the life of a professional (and possibly fictional) poker cheater. There's nothing wrong with that, but it wasn't the book I thought it was going to be so I wanted to post a warning to make sure you knew what you were getting.

About the Author

Jerry H. Bentley was professor of history at the University of Hawai‘i and editor of the

Journal of World History. His research on the religious, moral, and political writings of

Renaissance humanists led to the publication of Humanists and Holy Writ: New Testament

Scholarship in the Renaissance (Princeton, 1983) and Politics and Culture in Renaissance

Naples (Princeton, 1987). More recently, his research was concentrated on global history

and particularly on processes of cross-cultural interaction. His book Old World Encounters:

Cross-Cultural Contacts and Exchanges in Pre-Modern Times (New York, 1993) examines

processes of cultural exchange and religious conversion before the modern era, and his pamphlet

Shapes of World History in Twentieth-Century Scholarship (Washington, D.C., 1996)

discusses the historiography of world history. His most recent publication is The Oxford

Handbook of World History (Oxford, 2011), and he served as a member of the editorial team

preparing the forthcoming Cambridge History of the World. Jerry Bentley passed away in

July 2012.

Herbert F. Ziegler is an associate professor of history at the University of Hawai'i. He has taught world history since 1980 and currently serves as director of the world history program at the University of Hawai'i. He also serves as book review editor of the Journal of World History. His interest in twentieth-century European social and political history led to the publication of Nazi Germany's New Aristocracy(1990). He is at present working on a study that explores from a global point of view the demographic trends of the past ten thousand years, along with their concomitant technological, economic, and social developments. His other current research project focuses on the application of complexity theory to a comparative study of societies and their internal dynamics.

DO NOT BUY THIS EDITION!

I just took a class that used the 5th Edition. I took a gamble and bought the 4th Edition for $4 (a penny plus $3.99 shipping) and did not regret it. Everything you need is in the 4th edition for a fraction of the price. Paying for the 5th edition is just allowing yourself to be ripped off.

"Excellent book. The only one of it's kind!

After searching the web for months for music video production "how to's" and finding ZERO, this book is a pleasent but needed suprise. It is unbelieveable to me that there has not been a professional book written on how to make music videos since the format has been around over 20 years! This book is very comprehensive with a lot of insider tips and tricks from the people who do it everyday. I only wish it had more technical info such as lip sync secrets while shooting but because of the abundance of all the other info, you'll overcome any problem. avoid at all cost

I purchased this book back in 2000 when I was a film student. I purchased it hoping to read about about the joys and pains of being a music video director, something at the time I desperatly wanted to be. However this book was filled with nothing but a bunch of low budget, no talent hacks crying about how they should of, could of, would of. At the end of the read I felt as if I was cheated out of 15 bucks. For anyone who is looking to jump into the music video game, don't read this book, the best advice always comes from those who have mastered the field, so save your money and read up on other video directors like hype williams, f gary grey, paul hunter, spike jones, just to name a few, those are the ones this book should have featured.

An excellent guide to wannabe music video makers.

I have read and reread many passages in this book and have stood there. As an Indie video producer of no-budget production videos and one music video I find the info in this book inspiring and disheartening all at the same time. For anyone that wants to make music videos, this book is a must read. It is frank and honest to an almost painfull degree. The authors wear they're battle scars well and tell it like it is.

About the Author
Swami Bhajanananda Saraswati is a dasnami-naga-sannyasi in the lineage of Guru Dattatreya and Adi Shankaracharya. He is a devotee of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa and a disciple of Swami Omananda Sarswati and the late Swami Vishnudevananda Saraswati of Prayag. In India he stays at his ashram, the Yoga-Vedanta Kutir, located at the holy confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati rivers. In the United States, he stays at Kali Mandir, a Hindu temple in Laguna Beach, California, where he serves the awakened image of the Mother Goddess Kali and Her beautiful devotees.

Caution: this is a barebones pamphlet, at most.

This barely qualified as a pamphlet, much less a book.

First of all, it is 20 pages long. "Thin" one other reviewer writes. Yes, very, very thin.

Basically, this is a list of 21 extremely brief prayers, meditations, and ritual actions with no explanation or commentary. 2 of these are prayers to the author's gurus, Sri Ramakrishna and Sri Sarada Devi. A dashed off introductions provides little to no guidance, framework, or background for what follows. I won't say the title is misleading: it is simple, and there are instructions. But if I went to a puja, I might expect the material in this booklet to be handed out on a single, double-sided piece of paper, by way of a program, rather than sold for $15.

It does have value, it is not in accurate to the best of my ability to discern. It's just not very useful on its own.

An essential reference book for anyone who sews

I love this book! Even though I've been a sewing enthusiast for 30 years and a professional seamstress for 20 (I even worked at a busy independent fabric store for many years), I have wondered all this time where a book like this existed! We've all had machines that had extra stitch functionality that we've never used, didn't know where to apply, or stitches that were only vaguely described in the sewing machine manual. This book helpfully clears up these mysteries with clear diagrams and beautiful photographs. Ms Vasbinder also explains how and when to use a whole host of hand-sewing stitches, and there is an extended glossary in the back with further information about sewing thread, needles, and common sewing machine feet.

Think you know it all? Maybe you'll discover the true use for many stitches that sat dusty and un-used on that old mechanical sewing machine? Or like I did, perhaps you'll consider buying a new, electronic machine that features many of these decorative and specialty finishing stitches. As a full-on junkie for antique mechanical sewing machines with limited stitch capability, I never felt the urge to go and buy a new machine until I read this book!

Ms Vasbinder not only tells you what the stitch is, what it is commonly used for, and shows a beautiful example of the stitch on real fabric, but she also shares which machines are likely to feature the stitch (electronic only, machines with mechanical cams) and whether or not the sewing machine automatically secures the stitch for you. The same attention has been paid to the hand-sewing segment; all of those stitches are thoroughly explained and clear diagrams easily teach the reader how and when to use the stitch.

Sewists of all kinds will find this an extremely valuable resource, but I believe it will be of particular interest to those who sew garments, home fashions and decor, and home crafts. Quilters who use their machines for applique will enjoy the wealth of stitches available for this purpose. I would also highly recommend this book for someone who is in the market for a new machine, as they could note stitches or features to look for in a new or used machine and use that as a buying and test-driving guide!

I consider this book an unmatched reference for sewing educators, serious sewing students, professional clothiers, and fabric stores. On top of the quality of information, it's a good size (not cumbersome) and is graced with beautiful fonts and colors throughout. A lay-flat binding would have been nice, but hey - you can't have everything!

Wonderful Guide to Sewing Machine Stitches!

Woohoo! So while I was on a vacation, celebrating my 15 year marriage anniversary with my husband, my book came. My kids were so anxious to open the package that I had multiple text messages and voice messages left asking if they could open the package.
So I get home, and I open the package and start reading a marvelous guide to the stitches I have on my machine. I have had my machine for 10 years now, and I love it, however I have nerver realized how useful it can be. This book explains the different stitches you have on your machine. It also tells you what presser feet to use. (I learned that most of the same names are used by the different sewing machine companies.)
Super Stitches Sewing by Nicole Vasbinder is a easy to follow guide for the beginning to advanced sewer. I love knowing that I can turn to any page in this book, and find out new information, or refresh my memory on what I already know.

I was curious as to why my stitching did not turn out well on knitted material, and I have always dreaded sewing knits. Well now I know exactly what needles to use, what presser feet to use, and which stitches to use.
I am a quilter, and generally only use the different stitches when doing applique. I feel more confident now about sewing clothes, or even doing clothes repairs, than I did before I received this book.
I believe that this is a book that every person should own. I wish my machine came with this book. I think it would benefit sewing machine shops to have this book in stock for their customers.

Rosetta Stone for Stitching

Never again will I refer to stitches on my sewing machine as "the one that looks like shark teeth" or "the zigzaggy one with the thread on the edge". Super Stitches Sewing is the Rosetta Stone of embroidery hieroglyphics I didn't even know I needed.

Not only does Nicole Vasbinder explain what each stitch looks like, how the machine moves to create it, and what it's used for, she also explains what fabric you are probably going to want to use it with, the right threads/needles, and step-by-step instructions for using them effectively in your sewing. The book is cleverly organized. It gives you alternate names for each stitch, and substitutes in case your machine doesn't have that one. It's also a lot prettier and easier to read than my sewing machine's manual. I especially appreciate the Expert Tips scattered throughout the book--Vasbinder anticipates what problems a beginner might run into and explains how to avoid these pitfalls.

If I had to say one negative thing about the book, it would be that the tools & equipment section I usually expect to see in the beginning of the book is actually in the back. Most of my other sewing books start out with a detailed explanation of terms and items needed for executing each technique. I'm not an expert sewist by any means, in fact I sew infrequently out of fear. So when I started reading and ran into unfamiliar terms like "wing needle" or "overcast foot", I got a little nervous, even though I knew I could probably check Google or YouTube for more info.

Then I reached the end of the hand-stitching chapter and found explanations and diagrams for the various needles, threads, presser feet, and sewing terms mentioned in the book. It even includes explanations of how to change stitches on a manual, mechanical, and a computerized sewing machine. I might actually finish out the year knowing what all the little sliders, knobs, and buttons are for.

Aside from the thoroughness of the book, I appreciate that there's not much in the way of projects to distract you from the information. There's just enough to give you ideas, but not enough to overwhelm and confuse. I think this would be a great tool for a beginner-to-intermediate sewist to make a cloth sampler book of stitches and actually explore how to use a sewing machine beyond the usual straight and zigzag stitches.

My first goal: hem a skirt with Straight Blind Hem Stitch (page 30), which I can now stop calling "the one that looks like some plateaus".
