First, the metaphysics of Aristotle's logical works: the concepts of universal and particular underwent surprising transformations in this period, which gave rise to debates, still raging today, on personal survival after an interruption such as death. Second, logic in a more conventional sense: perhaps the most impressive debate was on the existence of the subject in singular and universal statements. There was also debate about the very different Aristotelian and Stoic conceptions of syllogism, of modal logic, of induction, of the nature of mathematics, and of philosophy of language. Third, the higher metaphysics of the Neoplatonists taught Augustine, and indirectly Descartes, to look for truth within themselves. The Neoplatonists struggled with the question whether our higher intellectual selves have distinct individuality, and thus they fed both sides in the great medieval debate between Aquinas and the followers of Averroes on individual human immortality. All sources appear in English translation and are carefully linked and cross-referenced by editorial comment and explanation. Bibliographies are provided throughout.

This is the third (metaphysics and logic) out of three magnificent academic volumes treating the subject of neo-Platonism, during its emergence to a position of dominance around the 200-600 AD era. This three-fold series comprises a condensed collection of neo-Platonic commentary on Aristotle as glossed by authors who generally believed Plato and Aristotle to, by and large, agree on main points of philosophical doctrine. Selections are drawn from the extensive 'Ancient Commentators on Aristotle' series and are arranged here in an orderly manner according to topical-matter. Detailed explanatory notes and headings, with cross-references, accompany the primary textual matter, making this series a superior educational tool for serious readers interested in late classical/early medieval philosophy. In addition to this work on Psychology, Ethics and Religion, volume two treats of ancient Physics and three of Logic and Metaphysics: they are all to be read and enjoyed collectively. "This remains one of the best, if not the best, book for understanding and learning how to perform the basic outpatient procedures in the primary care office. The first edition was published in 2009.�Because the purpose of this book is to teach, the editor describes the focus of this second edition as breaking down each procedure into its component parts and illustrating techniques to give primary care and emergency medicine providers the skills necessary to provide primary care services. The editor and contributors have continued the work begun with the first edition.�The audience includes primary care and emergency medicine providers, resident or attending, as well as the nursing and technical staff who are called upon to prepare patients and assist in the procedure. For the most part, the contributors are highly experienced practitioners and teachers.�The value of this book lies in the completeness of the information, the explanations of the important aspects of the procedure, indications and contraindications, the equipment lists, the pictures and videos of the procedure, and the CPT billing codes associated with the procedures.�This continues to be a most necessary addition to every training program in primary care or emergency medicine. It is one of the best books on outpatient procedures -- there are few that come close."

This book is excellent! It is clear,concise and has step-by-step instructions for common office procedures; as well as photographs. This book will definately improve your clinical skills and performance. I highly recommend.

excellent but pictures too small

This book is excellent and covers the subject matter well. However, the accompanying pictures (in the Kindle edition) are way too small and low resolution if you try to magnify them. Keep in mind, this is the Kindle edition I am reviewing, and I have not seen the hardback print edition. I'm not sure why the pictures are low rez, but it may be to decrease file size and have it download quickly. I would submit that those who are going to use this book would benefit from higher resolution / larger illustrations, and are not overly concerned about being able to download the book in 20 seconds (which it did). I would much rather have better pictures and a larger download. The accompanying pictures do a good job of adding to the text otherwise.

I'm giving 3 stars to the Kindle Edition because I feel the illustrations are such an important part of the book.

Otherwise, this book is excellent and recommended.

Helpful reference guide for variety of procedures

Well organized, easy to reference lay out for each procedure. Especially like the red flags, things to look out for, and post procedure care tips. Covers a lot of the procedures that are done commonly in the office, as well as many that are more specialized. Good for a quick refresher if you haven't done a procedure in awhile, or if you are looking to learn a new procedure related to something you already know how to do. Might be a little tough to use as a stand alone resource for something you have never done and are completely unfamiliar with, eg chest tube placement, though it does walk you through each step very clearly.

Edward Whymper made many first alpine ascents, including the Matterhorn in 1865 which ended in tragedy on the descent

Originally Published in 1871. Whymper details his Alps climbs in the 1860s with many first ascents including Mont Pelvoux in 1861, Barre des �crins in 1864, Mont Dolent and Aiguille d'Argenti�re in 1864, and Grand Cornier, Pointe Whymper on the Grandes Jorasses, and Aiguille Verte in 1865. But Whymper will always be remembered for the first ascent of the Matterhorn on July 14, 1865.

The Matterhorn was considered to be mountaineering's biggest challenge at the time, and Whymper met with failure again and again. Finally on his eighth attempt he finally succeeded, becoming the first man to reach the summit on July 14, 1865.

On the descent, tragedy struck when four members of the party slipped and were killed, and only the breaking of the rope saved Whymper and the two remaining guides from the same fate. A controversy ensued as to whether the rope had actually been cut, but a formal investigation could not find any proof.

The accident haunted Whymper: "Every night, do you understand, I see my comrades of the Matterhorn slipping on their backs, their arms outstretched, one after the other, in perfect order at equal distances - Croz the guide, first, then Hadow, then Hudson, and lastly Douglas. Yes, I shall always see them."

I thoroughly enjoyed the parts of the book dedicated to climbing and was struck by Whymper's adventurous spirit, and his dedication and perseverance. The book does drag on a bit in a few parts with chapters on the technical details about glaciers and railway tracks. The 130 illustrations, many woodcut by Whymper himself, bring the story to life, and are almost as good as photographs.

As one of the early mountain climbers, Whymper was not only a dedicated climber but also an astute observer of human nature and the natural environment. His writings reflect a strong will and great intelligence. The artistry of his mountain scenes vividly illustrate his book and combined with his witty prose make for a mountaineering classic

Interesting story; not an easy read

I bought the book due to my interest in the period it covers -- early Alpine mountaineering. Edward Whymper was an interesting guy, and certainly one of the foreign pioneers of mountain climbing (including the first climb of Matterhorn). I found him to be less inspiring as an author -- the book's pace is slow, punctuated by various tangential discussions, e.g. geology of glaciers.
It failed to capture my imagination, as other more receint mountaineering books have done -- try Gaston Rebuffat, Walter Bonatti, Chris Bonnington instead.

This book is very thorough, informative, and easy to understand. You can navigate through the chapters in any order. The text along with diagrams and charts are very helpful when learning how the body processes carbs, what they are used for, how much you need, and how to portion them. There are also chapters on going gluten free and managing exercise and hypoglycemia. There are some sample menus to aid with choices for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Whether it is you or someone in your family with diabetes, this book is a great resource to help balance food intake, beverage intake, exercise, weight control, heart health, and diabetes.

About the Author

Edith Foster is Associate Professor of History at Ashland University. He has introduced and annotated translations of Herodotus and Thucydides. He teaches Greek, Latin, and folklore at Ohio Wesleyan University.

Healing Gabriel

PLOT: Gabriel was involved in a car accident that left half of his body burned. As a result, he’s become a recluse. Hoping to help, his sister rents out the carriage house on Gabriel’s property.

Morgan and Gabe become friends over time. Soon it’s love but they both have to face Gabe’s fears of being accepted in society.

PROS: I loved Gabe and Morgan. Gabe is not the usual hero. He’s more shy and innocent. It’s a very sensual and loving story. It’s definitely one you will not forget.

CONS: I could complain about the way the story is almost over and then suddenly they find more reasons to be apart. I could complain, but I wasn’t that bothered by it.

4.5 - 5 STARS: I loved this story. I’m glad that I discovered Elizabeth Kelly.

Love isn't always pretty

Healing Gabriel by Elizabeth Kelly is one of the sweetest books I've read all year. Sometimes it helps to be reminded of how ugly love can be. Gabe and Morgan are like two puzzle pieces from different puzzles that fit together but just don't make sense. I loved this story! Gabe is scared and like living in the shadows of his own life and Morgan is like this locomotive of goodness and light, but they work! This story makes you love the struggle because all the time that you're reading it, you are pulling for them to accept the love they've found. It's just perfect love story.

I'm not really into novels with scarred heroes, but this one certainly was enjoyable. I loved that the female character was understanding of his situation, but did not pity him.

I enjoy Elizabeth Kelly's style of writing as you can easily relate to the narrator.

What can I say, it's the Urban Penguin. This book is amazing. It really helped me to understand how to configure Networking via the SystemD framework. Book does a very good job breaking down the nuances you'll need to understand what's new and how it differs from the old. Amazing books. I would like to have had more on DNS concepts, but the Author did a great job with what he did include. I would give this book a 6 is I could.
