From Kay Redfield Jamison - an international authority on manic-depressive illness, and one of the few women who are full professors of medicine at American Universities - a remarkable personal testimony: the revelation of her own struggle since adolescence with manic depression, and how it shaped her life. With vivid prose and wit, she takes us into the fascinating and dangerous territory of this form of madness - a world in which one pole can be the alluring dark land ruled by what Byron called the "melancholy star of the imagination," and the other a desert of depression and, all too frequently, death.
From Publishers Weekly
Johns Hopkins psychiatry professor Jamison, whose Touched with Fire addressed the link between manic-depressive illness and creativity, offers a poignant and powerful memoir of her own struggles with and triumphs over the disease. Her story suggests that, yes, with lithium as regulator, psychotherapy as sanctuary, professional support and love, manic-depressive illness can be managed. The illness is often genetic, and Jamison's exuberant but depressive father was a portent. Her first wave of mania came in high school, but college was a struggle marked by violent moods and passions, and grad school pushed her over the edge. During her first decade on lithium, the drug's side effects blurred her vision so that she could concentrate only on journal articles or poetry. Eventually she attempted suicide. The author's traumas helped drive her academic passions; her work also led her to a happy marriage. She has not had children of her own and raises eloquent?unanswerable?questions about manic-depressives bearing children. 75,000 first printing; Literary Guild and Doubleday Book Club alternates; author tour.

From Library Journal
This incredibly insightful work chronicles the life of a psychologist and professor of psychiatry at Johns Hopkins University who suffers from manic depression. Jamison began experiencing mood swings during adolescence but, despite her education and training, did not seek help until she had completed her doctorate and began teaching at UCLA. Like so many others suffering from manic depression, she felt initially that the depressions were only passing phases she'd have to work out herself. She experienced the manic phases as great periods of creativity and accomplishment and feared they would be deadened by using medication. (In an earlier book, Touched with Fire, LJ 2/15/93, Jamison explored the relationship between manic depression and creativity.) Jamison finally comes to grips with her illness and recognizes the importance of medication used in conjunction with psychotherapy. This combination of treatment controls her illness and has enabled her to succeed. Her story and writing style are both inspirational and educational. Highly recommended for all libraries.

A must read
By Cooperstown nana
Poetic and lyrical, this book was hard to put down. Jamison description of her own bipolar disease should be read by anyone who is in close contact with a person with BPD. (as well a any one who wants to read a good book.) I learned so much from this account even though I am an 'old' retired nurse who spent 3 months of my nursing education at a student at a state mental hospital shortly before the deinstitutionalization movement occurred, casting mentally ill people on the streets without a support network. I thought I knew what BPD was all about, but this book opened my eyes to the difficulty a person with BPD has with drug effects and loss of energy and creativeness that is present in the hypomanic stages.

I began reading this book shortly after finishing Elyn Saks ...
By Johnna Moretti
I began reading this book shortly after finishing Elyn Saks incredibly moving and inspirational memoir of her struggles with schizophrenia. I was hoping this book would mirror the same journey. Within 20 pages of reading this, I was immediately put off by a woman who clearly seeks only to impress her readers with her vast intelligence; using such an intense level of verbosity that it's impossible to connect to her illness. Aside from Jamison's pompous tone, and long winded memories filled with opulent tales of manic highs spent in Europe, there are no real depictions of her struggle, no raw window in to her illness. I very rarely feel compelled to write a review, but I'm hoping to save someone a frustrating experience of trying desperately to connect, to empathize or to understand the true account of someone stricken with mental illness. I urge all to avoid this tale of a woman who clearly seeks only to validate her intellect, rather than open the reader to the honest depiction of bipolar disorder.

Beautifully written
By Lady Lothlorien
I've read several books on bipolar disorder and this is one of the best. Jamison writes beautifully and from an interesting perspective as both a clinician/researcher and a person with bipolar disorder. To be clear, this book does not offer suggestions on how to manage the disorder or detailed descriptions of the symptoms. I would recommend reading other books for that information and then read this one. Jamison does explain some of the terminology but it's mostly focused on her personal experiences. For example, lithium works very well for Jamison and she repeatedly talks about how important it is in managing her bipolar. But not everyone with bipolar disorder responds well to lithium and Jamison doesn't really talk about other options. That's okay for a memoir like this; I just wouldn't recommend starting here. Its more important to know what to expect first and then dive into excellent memoirs like this one. As the wife of a person newly diagnosed with bipolar, I found Jamison's story both reassuring (she is functioning really well now) and terrifying (it took her a long time to accept the diagnosis and longer to accept taking meds consistently). A very good read.
